The District of Świebodzin is situated in the mid-western part of Lubuskie Province and borders on five other districts: Sulęcin, Krosno, Zielona Góra, Nowy Tomyśl and Międzyrzecz. It covers an area of 938 km2 inhabited by a population of 57 000.
The District of Świebodzin comprises two municipal-rural communes: Świebodzin and Zbąszynek as well as four rural communes: Lubrza, Łagów, Skąpe and Szczaniec.
Through the district run two international roads: E-30 (Berlin - Warsaw-Moscow), E-65 (Szczecin - Jakuszyce), and province class roads: no. 276 (Świebodzin - Krosno Odrzańskie), no. 277 (Sulechów - Skąpe), no. 303 (Świebodzin - Babimost), no. 302 (Brudzewo - Kręcko - Zbąszynek). Apart from those, a major railway line E-20 (Warsaw West - Kunowice - Berlin) runs across the District of Świebodzin.
The District of Świebodzin lies within an area called Lubuskie Lakeland. It rises above the surrounding valleys of the river Odra in the south and west, the river Obra in the east and the river Warta in the north. In the district area there are numerous postglacial channel lakes, peatbogs and rivers with complexes of meadows.
Gorgeous lakes, forests, meadows and tranquillity; all these can be found in any corner of the district and they ensure a splendid holiday.
A specification of the district’s landscape should contain varied surface features, interesting forest areas abundant in fauna, and attractive lakes featuring clean water and rich vegetation. There are two landscape parks in the district: Łagowski Landscape Park and Gryżyński Landscape Park, both of which are areas of unique beauty and nature values. Apart from the landscape parks there are numerous nature reserves: forest reserves (Grodziszcze, Kręcki Łęg, Buczyna Łagowska, Dębowy Ostrów), forest and landscape reserves (Nad Jeziorem Trześniowskim), and peatbog reserves (Pawski Ług and Pniewski Ług). The most renowned is the - Nietoperek - reserve which covers an underground system of corridors and fortifications in the former Międzyrzecz Fortified Zone. Approximately thirty thousand bats winter there every year, which makes it the largest bat wintering location in Central Europe. The area also has some ecolands the most familiar of which are Lake Księżno near the village of Wilkowo and Barcikowo Peatbog near Łagów.
In every corner of the district you can find numerous beautiful lakes, woodlands, meadows; all amongst tranquillity allowing the best of relax. The lakes provide a great opportunity for fishing and water sports. The largest lakes in the district are: Lake Ciecz (Lake Trześniowskie), Lake Łagowskie, Lake Niesłysz (Lake Niesulickie), Lake Paklicko Wielkie (Lake Paklicko) and Lake Goszcza.
Among numerous nature monuments, a quarter of which are in the vicinity of Łagów, stand out 700 year-old oak trees in Przełazy, Toporów and Łagów as well as 400 year-old ones in Lubrza and Szczaniec. Another relict of nature is a specimen of American tulip tree (circumference 384 cm and height 28 m) which grows at Lake Łagowskie.
The District of Świebodzin has a unique character. On the one hand it is a powerful economic centre while on the other hand it is an unquestionable tourist region. The region can enjoy prosperity due to its geographic location on the trans-European route East-West. Such favourable location has raised Świebodzin to a high position in the nationwide ranking of investment attraction of district towns (synthetic index acc. to the Institute for Market Economics). The ranking takes into account such factors as labour market absorption, labour market quality, social atmosphere, technical infrastructure, business environment, economic transformation, leisure opportunities, marketing activity. This creates extensive opportunities for the enterprises in our district which take the advantage of logistic contact with almost all countries of Europe and the world.
